Reiki is a beautiful healing art offering beneficial, calming, balancing and stress-reducing effects. It is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of light touch or non-touch to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being.
Dr Mikao Usui was a Buddhist monk who discovered information written in Sanskrit in the library of the Monastery where he lived. He realised it was part of the information he had been seeking. He went up to Mount Kuruma and meditated there for 21 days in order to understand the subtleties of what he had discovered. On the 21st day he perceived a ball of light hurtling toward him. When he recovered he understood the full meaning of his discovery. He returned home and began sharing his discovery with friends and family and organised a Society called Gakkai. From then on the word spread through Japan and eventually reached the Western World where Reiki is now practised widely.
During a Reiki session the Reiki Master will go through a consultation form to find out about your health and lifestyle, this will help provide a Reiki session individual to you. You will be asked to remove your shoes but remain fully clothed and you will be asked to lie down on a massage style couch to be able to fully relax and tap into your energy.
The Reiki Master will use her hands to scan your body and feel your energy and work on different points called Chakras (energy centres) by lightly placing her hands over these areas.
Most Reiki Masters work with relaxing music which helps reach deep relaxation, but it is up to the person receiving Reiki to decide if they want music or prefer silence.
Generally a session will last around an hour. Whilst receiving Reiki you might feel different sensations, such as tingling, heat or cold which are perfectly normal as your Reiki Master is helping you balance your energy, helping you to heal yourself.
Distant Reiki is also possible. The Reiki Master can channel Reiki distantly, the session is just as effective as energy travels in space and time. The Reiki Master will guide you and give you directions on what to do prior to the session so you can benefit fully. All you need is a quiet space for an hour or so, some relaxing music and somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down.
